PSV Eindhoven, originally founded as a club for Philips company employees in 1913, has evolved into a European football powerhouse. Along with rivals Ajax and Feyenoord, it forms the "Big Three" that have historically dominated the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football. The club has never been relegated from the Eredivisie, a testament to its consistency and excellence for over a century.
PSV's golden era materialized in two distinct periods. The first was in the late 1970s, culminating in a UEFA Cup victory in 1978. The second, and most memorable, was the 1987-88 season, in which a team led by Guus Hiddink and featuring players like Ronald Koeman and Hans van Breukelen, achieved the treble: Eredivisie, KNVB Cup, and the prestigious European Cup, defeating Benfica in the final. This achievement remains the highest point in the club's history.
The Philips Stadion, with a capacity of around 35,000, is not just a stadium but the heart of the club, located on the same ground where the team played its first match. The connection with Philips remains strong, reflecting a legacy of innovation and community. PSV is also famous for its incredible ability to identify and nurture talent, with a list of alumni that includes some of the biggest names in world football, such as Ruud Gullit, Ronaldo, Romário, Arjen Robben, and Ruud van Nistelrooy, cementing its status as a factory of stars.
